One evening, at the dismal nadir of the first pandemic winter, I went a step too far. Months had passed since my last day of gainful employment at the grocery store where I’d landed after finishing grad school, and I was still living in Fayetteville, Arkansas, surviving on a shoestring budget, writing a novel, going for several aimless walks a day, and smoking lots of weed.
