With dawn’s first light kissing the horizon, I roused myself from the embrace of peaceful slumber and embarked, bleary-eyed, on my morning routine. It was Thursday, the day that I awaited ever week with succulent anticipation, and the tranquility of 7:00 a.m. inversely prefigured the lively atmosphere of Sidi Kacem, capital of the province of the same name, and the outdoor market nestled in its labyrinthine heart. Though I have the means to frequent haute couture establishments and sprawling, luxurious malls, I’m drawn in another direction, away from those opulent enclaves and toward experiences of another kind.
